Composition of Sound was formed in 1978 in Basildon, Essex, by guitarists/vocalists Andy Fletcher , Martin Gore and keyboardists Vince Clarke. In 1980 Dave Gahan joins the band cause Vince Clarke didn’t felt well as in the role of vocalist .Dave was recruited by singing the song « Heroes » fromDavid Bowie. After he joined the band  Dave renamed the group
Depeche Mode , a name taken from a french fashion magazine. The band first believed that this name meaned « Fast Fashion » because they wrote it in the early days like Dépêché Mode , but in fact the name itself Depeche Mode , as taken from the french magazine means NEWS ABOUT FASHION
They went to different clubs and different companies to try to promote their songs.

DEPECHE MODE

The name Depeche Mode comes from the french fashion magazine that is also called « Depeche Mode ».As David Gahan was in an arts school  he knew that magazine.as he found the name real good, and believed the name meaned « FAST FASHION » they took Depeche Mode as a name for the band instead of Composition of Sound ( their previous name) .

The magazine doesn’t exist anymore in France and the name of the magazine doesn’t mean FAST FASHION at all, it meant: the NEWS ABOUT FASHION  , and in all these years i’ve been a fan i’ve never seen the mag speaking of the band… isn’t that strange???
As for information, it seemed that while the band was choosing for another name for the band instead of Composition of Sound
one of the few names they had intentions to use was LEMON PEELS , thanks god they kept Depeche Mode instead !!!

It was quite unsuccessfull  except for their particpation in the « Some Bizzare album »  and being guests to a group called Fad Gadget.They are noticed by Daniel Miller  , the owner of a new independant music company The legend said that only an oral contract was made between  them

In October 1981 they release their first album : « Speak And Spell » ( a quick reference to the electronic game of that era) with the big hit : « Just Can’t Get Enough ». Shortly after they started getting a lot of success

Composition of Sound fut créé en 1978 à Basildon, Essex, par les guitaristes/chanteurs Andy Fletcher , Martin Gore et aux synthétiseur Vince Clarke. En 1980 Dave Gahan se joint au groupe car Vince Clarke ne se sent pas à l’aise dans le rôle de chanteur. Dave fut recruté en  chantant la chanson « Heroes » de David Bowie. Après que  Dave ait rejoint Composition of Sound il le renomma en Depeche Mode , un nom pris d’un magazine français sur la mode.
Le groupe au début croyait, que ce nom signifiait « Mode Rapide » ( « Fast Fashion »  en anglais) et cela s’explique par le fait que le groupe écrivait et prononçait à leur début le nom de cette façon : Dépêché Mode, car en fait le nom « Dépêche  » Mode = news sur la Mode… ( tiré du magasine français)

DEPECHE MODE
Le nom Depeche Mode est tiré du magazine de mode , français, qui s’appelle aussi « Depeche Mode ».Comme David Gahan était dans une école d’arts , il connaissait bien ce magazine.Comme il trouvait le nom plaisant et croyait que cela voulait dire « FAST FASHION »( Mode rapide) , ils prirent Depeche Mode comme nom pour le groupe au lieu de Composition of Sound ( leur ancien nom de groupe) .

Le magazine n’existe plus en France , et le nom du magazine ne veut pas dire MODE RAPIDE/FAST FASHIONdu tout, cela veut simplement dire: les NOUVELLES SUR LA MODE  , et depuis toutes ces années ou je suis fan je n’ai jamais vu le magazine parler du groupe… n’est ce pas étrange???
Pour Anecdote, il semble qu’une des propositions de nom pour le groupe, que les membres avait retenu au lieu de Composition of Sound était : LEMON PEELS , grâce à Dieu ils ont préféré prendre Depeche Mode!!!!

Ils se présentèrent à de différent clubs et de différentes compagnies de musique pour   promouvoir leurs chansons. Ce fut sans gros succès  excepté pour leur participation à un certain « Some Bizzare album »  et faire la première partie d’un groupe appelé Fad Gadget( de chez Mute Records).
Ils furent alors remarqué par Daniel Miller , le responsable d’une compagnie musicale indépendante : 
La légende veut qu’il y eu seulement un contrat oral  passé entre Depeche Mode et Daniel Miller.

En Octobre 1981 ils sortent leur premier album : « Speak And Spell » (le nom anglais pour le jeu électronique connu sous le nom de dictée magique) accompagné du hit qui les rendra célèbres : « Just Can’t Get Enough ». Peu de temps après qu’ils commencèrent à avoir du succès  Vince Clarke décida de quitter le groupe
