Legendary artist Bernie Wrightson passed away on March 18 at the age of 68 after a lengthy battle with brain cancer according to a post from his wife, Liz, on Facebook. Wrightson had announced his retirement from creating new art in January owing to complications from recent surgeries.
Wrightson was best known as one of the greatest horror artist in comics history, and as the co-creator of Swamp Thing. Wrightson created many stunning Frankenstein drawings in the 1970s and 1980s which were used in Marvel Comics’ first illustrated novel, Frankenstein, in 1983. A 25th anniversary edition of the illustrated novel was published by Dark Horse in 2008.
Wrightson also contributed art to several movies including Heavy Metal and Creepshow.
He is survived by his wife, Liz, sons John and Jeffrey, and stepson Thomas.
